FBLA Management Information Systems Practice Test

The primary function of a firewall in information systems is to protect networks by controlling incoming and outgoing network traffic. Firewalls serve as a barrier between trusted internal networks and untrusted external networks, such as the internet. By monitoring and filtering data packets based on predetermined security rules, firewalls can prevent unauthorized access, protect sensitive information, and mitigate various cyber threats, including viruses, malware, and unauthorized intrusions.

This capability is crucial for maintaining the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of network resources. Firewalls can be configured to allow or block specific traffic based on various criteria, such as IP addresses, protocol types, and port numbers. This level of control helps ensure that only legitimate traffic is allowed to pass through while keeping potential threats at bay.

Other functions, such as enhancing system performance, managing user accounts, or securely storing data, do not align with the primary role of a firewall, which is focused specifically on traffic control and network security.
